Chennai the city of the future ?

I was in chennai recently and have been going there on and off for the last couple of years. In this visit I was surprised to see the infrastructure build up. Wide roads , cemented pavements , malls coming up ,very few potholes - though the quality is still suspect in some cases but nevertheless it was obvious that the city is probably gearing up for the future even though any one who visits chennai has only horror stories of dealing with the local populace. How he or she got ragged by the auto rickshaw is the famous grouse. One of my friends has even name them " cockroaches" . The language problem seems to be getting worse. Inspite of these overwhelming odds against the city - as per the current statistics Chennai has more software exports than the silicon valley of India - Bangalore and growing.

The Chennai airport was in stark contrast to bangalore which is nothing but a secured Bus terminal, hardly any place to sit after security check, dirty sofas , nothing worth mentioning about . Whereas Chennai is far better and where the chances of getting claustrophobic are rare. I happen to see a group of 25 firangees ( supposedly were here to attend some partnership summit) and they seem all lost in the hustle bustle of bangalore airport , they did even have a place to stand and where getting pushed around by the other folks coming out of the airport.

Even Infosys has plans to have close to 50000 employees in chennai in the next couple of years as against Bangalore most of the development has already been carried out.

The goverment seems to be serious on the development and wants to make chennai a world class city even with the obvious constraints and looking at the current developments, surely will be the city to watch out in future.

Good post.

Well there are some areas madras has to improve
1. Water (Lets hope Desalination plant comes up very fast. Though costly public will not be at the mercy of Tanker lobby. Just hope Goverment takes this issue very seriously
2. Auto Drivers (These are the biggest problem makes of Madras.
Lets hope the recent revision of fare is addressing this issue and bring some respite.
3. Climate. (Well there is no scope of Improvement since its not the fault of madras in this. So we have to ignore)

Well these issues are addressed then its really a city to look forward to in the future.

After having worked in Madras for 6 years, I am really missing it these days. Hope to return to my second home sometime in future!!!!

Well,

I am a Chennaite from Birth and due to my job have lived and worked in many cities in India and various countries. I feel that the weather is the best in Chennai from a health point of view. The heat in the day time is a very healthy one and it prevents people from putting on weight and get unnessary health issues. The evening wind is relaxing and hence i think that is a great place to live. I have lived in Bangalore, Mumbai, NY, SG, Dubai, London and few other cities but still feel that Chennais weather is the best.
